Drip, drip, drip, drip. Every time it rains, the gym floor at Wells Central School gets a little wet. Leaks in the aging gymnasium roof are developing into an ongoing safety and maintenance problem.

Superintendent Paul Williamsen and the Wells Board of Education have begun the process to secure necessary funding to replace the leaky roof before it becomes a serious safety concern or significant damage is done to the hardwood gym floor. New York State is offering to fund projects of this type through EXCEL aid, a one-time allocation for school capital projects throughout the state. The availability of EXCEL aid will make the repairs possible with little or no impact on local taxpayers.

The cost of repairs will be paid from the district’s fund balance, with $55,000 reimbursed with EXCEL aid. A condition of EXCEL funding requires the district to first incur the cost of the project, and then be reimbursed by the state. Because the total cost of the project will not require the district to borrow any money, the project will not require a vote by district residents.
